Maximus Cigar Socials

This week, I had the opportunity to sit down with DJ Reed of Maximus.

 

DJ runs Maximus with his partner Joe Smith.  MAXIMUS organizes quarterly socials and periodic smokers for Real Men and butch boys — not the nelly or faint of heart — who know, crave and indulge in the macho appeal and libido-stoking lure of cigar-smoking, pipe-smoking, and the he-man camaraderie and male bonding they stir up. Where there's smoke, there's fire — and you'll find both at MAXIMUS gatherings.

 

 

TheCompleteBear: Morning

 

N2MAXIMUS: Morning Mike...how goes?

 

TheCompleteBear: It goes bud you?

 

N2MAXIMUS: I'm kinda nervous.....we're having our first BlackFire meeting tonight.

 

TheCompleteBear: So, tell me about you guys.  How long have you been together?

 

N2MAXIMUS: We've been together for 5 years... We have an open relationship, and are very close – we play together and apart...

 

MAXIMUS is my dream come true....I'm more of a cigar man, Joe's more of a pipe man.   Our relationship works very well...He's a truck driver and I do handy work when possible...although, MAXIMUS does take alot of my time!

 

TheCompleteBear: How did you meet?

 

N2MAXIMUS: We met at the Tool Shed here in Palm Springs...I was smoking a cigar in the smoking area and he was in cowboy garb...(I'm a sucker for blue collar men) and those smiling eyes were just awesome...I had to talk to him.

 

TheCompleteBear: What is your tip for staying together for 5 years?

 

N2MAXIMUS: Communicate openly, don't hide anything from each other and realize that we are men and men have gonads. LOL

 

TheCompleteBear: Words to live by!

 

N2MAXIMUS: Yeah, well it works for us... We are the best of friends too.  That's very important

 

TheCompleteBear: So, tell us a little about the history of The Men of Maximus

 

N2MAXIMUS: Well, Joe and I decided in May of 2003 to start a cigar social organization. We had our first cigar social September of that year.   Also, I wanted to have as many of the postermen...

 

We wanted to be different and have as many of the postermen at the events we would schedule...  How many events have you gone to that you saw someone hot in a poster and thought - "He's hot, I wonder if he's going to be there?"  So we started out that way, and now we regularly have our postermen show for our events.

 

TheCompleteBear: How often are the socials?

 

N2MAXIMUS: It depends, we have 1 social a year in San Diego, one a year in San Francisco,(during Hairrison Street Fair).  In addition, we have 6 lined up for Los Angeles, including Gay Pride in LA... and LA Leather weekend this weekend and about 4 a year in Palm Springs, which we have the Warehouse 661 cigar parties.

 

TheCompleteBear: How many attendees typically?

 

N2MAXIMUS: It varies according to the city and the event....in Los Angeles, we have about  45-70 men attend...Gay Pride we have about 200-250 attend and socialize in our cigar lounge for which we have a humidor that belonged to Hugh Hefner...*huge* In Palm Springs, we average about 45-80 MEN at the bar events, and about 100- 150 at our WAREHOUSE 661 cigar parties....

 

TheCompleteBear: What is the dress code, if any?

 

N2MAXIMUS: No cologne, just blue jeans and such.  Mostly blue collar, leather, cowboy gear, etc.  We have all kinds of men attend, even rubber men at our warehouse parties and gay pride.

 

Last year, at gay pride, we had a bisexual rubber couple spend a lot of time in the cage at our booth and tied up a couple of men there as well for smoke play.  Most of the men that attend our events are regular kind of guys very sociable, and a lot of bears do come out of their dens..LOL

 

TheCompleteBear: Tell us about BlackFire Weekend.

N2MAXIMUS: BlackFire Weekend is something that we wanted to do for a while...it is a tattoo and cigar 4 day weekend.   We're having a "tattoo pool party", Bike run, cigar dinner, and Tool Shed Bar Smoker.   MadDog is doing tattoo's from 2-7pm at the Barracks Bar on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of September 18-21, 2008.  There is also a big Warehouse Leather Cigar Party that weekend.  There is a registration for BlackFire weekend and that also qualifies you for a drawing of a free tattoo done by Mad Dog that weekend.

 

TheCompleteBear: What is your favorite cigar?

 

N2MAXIMUS: Red Lion "King of Cigars" or Casablanca Magnum.

 

TheCompleteBear: What is your best cigar  tip?

 

N2MAXIMUS: Best cigar tip would be make sure your cigars are kept fresh...by keeping a corner of a sponge moist with distilled water in the bag with the cigars, but not touching the cigars.
