The Team

Mike Doherty – Big Guy

Armed with a sense of humor, a love of shopping and a good friend (co-founder Liza Sibley, Mistress of Procurement), Mike has launched The Complete Bear just in time for holiday shopping.

"My fantasy has always been a big, furry man in a cabin with a fire blazing.  Of course, being gay means the cabin is decorated with nothing but the finest throws and accessories.  So grab yourself a warm furry bear and snuggle under one of our favorite throws . . ."

Mike Doherty has a long history of business development, strategy and planning. Mike has launched and managed several ventures personally, so he understands the challenges of managing day-to-day operations while remaining focused on growth opportunities and the bottom line. He has also worked as an investor and a lender and therefore recognizes the demands and expectations these parties bring to the mix.

Mike has BS in Commerce from DePaul University in Chicago.  In addition, Mike is an Alumnus of the 1997 Class of the Venture Capital Institute (VCI) and the 2006 Class of Leadership San Francisco (LSF).  Currently, Mike serves on the boards of the Golden Gate Business Association (GGBA) and the SF Small Business Network (SBN).

In addition, Mike writes The Art of Doing Business - a blog on the trials and tribulations of being a small business owner.

Mike lives in San Francisco with his partner, Jorge and their dogs – Puck and Miguel - as well as one very disgruntled cat, Scudder.

Liza Sibley – Mistress of Procurement

So what exactly do you call a Lady Bear? – Mistress of course . . .

Liza Sibley is the Mistress of Procurement at The Complete Bear.   Along with her business partner - Mike Doherty – she scours the forest for cool stuff for all of our friendly wooded creatures – bears, cubs, otters . . .

Whether it’s Ornaments for the Tree or a Denali throw for the Den – it has to get past the Mistress – no easy task.  She recently sailed the high seas – OK, it was Puerto Vallarta! – with over 200 bears on the Lazy Bear at Sea Cruise.  She was the one with the T-Shirts.

Liza brings a unique blend of professional and life experience. She spent 20 years being a homemaker, raising two children and three Guide Dogs for the Blind puppies. Most recently, Liza had been working in both the medium and maximum security county jails as a literary outreach and high school teacher.

Liza and Mike met while they were both volunteers for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network – a group working to overturn the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policies.

Born in Rochester, New York, Liza attended Skidmore College and the University of South Carolina where she received a B.S. in Chemistry with a math minor. She moved to California (where she always knew she should be) in 1975 to attend graduate school at UC Berkeley. She graduated with a Master’s of Science studying organo-actinide chemistry.

Liza lives in San Francisco with her partner, Jody and career change guide dog - Espresso. She enjoys riding her retired racehorse, Utah Beach.

  • Liza - "I'm just gonna go look"
  • Mike - "No one looks at puppies, if you go, you're bringing one home!"

Recently (1/07), Radar joined the family.  He is a 1 1/2 year old lab.
